There are many winter stations in the Mediterranean, but very few that unite all the conditions that constitute a typical health resort: a fine climate ; comfortable residence ; good society; excellent sanitary conditions ; and a beautiful and interesting country.

From all these points of view Algiers is without a rival in the Mediterranean.
The town itself is an oriental gem within twenty hours' sail of Europe and the panorama from the heights of Mustapha is unique. A hotel proprietor might be suspected of partiality but the author of Murray's well-known "Hand-book to Algeria and the Mediterranean", asserts that "the only view to compare with it is that from the Greek theatre of Taormina".
