Walking Dartmoor's ancient tracks: a guide to 28 routes.

HEMERY ERIC

Published by Robert Hale, hardcover with dustjacket, illustrated.

This is the first detailed and definitive guide to Dartmoor's most important and hitherto uncharted historic tracks. Until now, the moor's traditional travel routes have been shrouded in mystery and many of them were in danger of being lost altogether. Now, through meticulous research and intensive field work over decades to clarify doubtful portions of the routes, Eric Hemery, Dartmoor's leading writer, has established the historical background to the 28 tracks described here.

Sixteen trans-moorland tracks occupy part 1 of the book and twelve inter-moorland tracks, part 2, many of which have not been previously researched and are published here for the first time. Detailed maps and illustrations allow readers to follow in the steps of monks, merchants, tin miners and others who over the centuries established safe ways across the treacherous moor.

This book will be welcomed by all serious devotees of Dartmoor as a unique work of exacting scholarship.

Born in the Blackmoor Vale of Dorset in 1914, Eric Hemery trained as a musician. In intervals between his musical commitments he studied, explored and guided on Dartmoor, becoming the region's foremost writer and lecturer. Author of the definitive High Dartmoor: Land and People ('the standard work', Daily Telegraph), Eric Hemery was the acknowledged world authority on Dartmoor until his death in early 1986.
