JOHANN REINHOLD FORSTER (1729-98)
Johann Reinhold Forster was born in Dirschau in West Prussia in 1729. After studying at Berlin and Halle he became a reformed church minister at Nassenhuben near Danzig in 1753.
He was commissioned by the Russian Emperor in 1765 to study the colonies at Säratof on the Volga, and in the following year left St. Petersburg for England, where he became Professor of Natural History, French and German at the Dissenter Academy at Warrington near Lancashire. He resigned this post in 1767,but continued teaching languages.
Towards the end of 1770 Forster went to London to join Dalrymple on a journey to Balambangan, but nothing came of the venture. He later served as a naturalist on Captain Cook's second journey around the world from 1772 to 1775.
On his return he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law from the University of Oxford, and in 1780 the King of Prussia appointed him a Privy Councillor. At the same time he was made professor of Natural History at the University of Halle, where he was awarded an honorary M. Phil. In 1781 he became a Doctor of Medicine and Member of the Faculty. He died in 1798.
