As its title suggests, this book unites two streams of experience, the military experience of a professional soldier who has been a protagonist of machine-gun and armoured warfare and the civil experience derived from his present duties as a regional officer of civil defence. Chapter I distinguishes between the features of modern warfare and the fundamental principles which run through the war. Chapter II analyses the tactical sequence of the armoured attack, is the outcome of the new master weapon, the tank, which fust disclosed its revolutionary qualities at Cambrai in 1917. Chapter III re-examines the problem from the standpoint of German teaching and performance, and develops in detail the reply to the tank attack.
