INTRODUCTION AND HISTORICAL SKETCH
Pompeii stands on a lava spur running out into the plain from the slopes of Vesuvius, a short distance from the sea and from the river Sarno. The site was well suited for human settlement, particularly of an agricultural and commercial character, and was probably already inhabited from an early date, when Campania was still occupied by the Oscans. In early historical times the existence of a temple of Greek type dating from the middle of the 6th century B.C. attests the influence of the neighbouring Greek colonies, notably of Cuma; and there is evidence that it was also in contact with the Etruscan world, which on several occasions clashed with the Greeks in an attempt to oust them from the control of this region. Pompeii was involved in the invasion' and subsequent domination of Campania by the Samnites (about 424 B.C.), and from this moment on we are better informed about the lay-out and development of the city. It was, however, only a small place, and mentions of it in the history of the following centuries are correspondingly few.
