Our Railway History
Bucknall Rixon
Published by George Allen and Unwin LTD, hardcover with dustjacket.
Eight coloured plates and 124 illustrations.
Who could resist the appeal of a splendidly coloured railway train, gleaming, powerful, and tinged with romance? Here is a well illustrated story of the golden age of our railways from the Channel Coast to the North of Scotland. It covers the history of our sixteen major railways before the Ministry of Transport Railways Act of 1921 came into force on New Year's Day 1923. By it, four large grouped companies were formed, The London, Midland and Scottish Railway, The London and North Eastern Railway, The Great Western, and The Southern.
This work is complementary to many excellent railway books and also to various articles which appear from time to time in the railway journals: it fills in the background with a connected narrative and it places each event in its proper perspective and position.
Over the period 1944-46 this book ran to two Editions and a Reprint and it was extremely well received. In presenting this revised and enlarged Third Edition opportunity has been taken to introduce further detail at a considerable number of points, which with the addition of plates in colour should add greatly to the value of the work.
