PREFACE
This little book deals, in a way necessarily glancing and concise, with the eleven provinces of the kingdom of the Netherlands, and is called after the largest and most important part, Holland, in accordance with the custom which has used this name instead of that of the Netherlands, or the Country of the Dutch ; a custom of such endurance that it is even adopted, on occasion, by the Dutch themselves, and seems here to fit in more with the plan of the series than the less-known name of the Netherlands, or the old-fashioned and charming title of the Low Countries.
Holland is very well known under some aspects, and those perhaps the most superficial ; and less known under others, more important and more attractive. An attempt here is made to give emphasis to these. The country is very small, but it is packed with interest, and by no means to be quickly or superficially surveyed—though, of course, one may get a quick and delightful impression from a short visit. It is, probably, the easiest country in Europe—which is to say, in the world—for a traveller. You may go by rail, by bicycle, by motor-car, on foot, or even by tram, straight over the country, from end to end, without fear of any delays or disagreeableness.
