Omschrijving:
Herm its mysteries and its charm
Marschall Michael
Printed and published by The Guernsey Press Company, softcover. Illustrated.
THE story of Herm is now written for the first time.
Books on the Channel Islands make only brief and passing reference to this delightful island which is visited annually by thousands of holiday-makers. It was to satisfy the latter's curiosity, to answer some of their questions, that this little book was written.
My thanks are due to Mr. Len O'Brien, Mrs. M. Le Page, Mr. F. Dickson, Mr. Arthur Mahy, the Bailiff's Secretary ; Rev. S. W. Gerhold, Isidor Bretel, Sir Compton Mackenzie, Mr. Raymond Falla, and Rev. S. T. Percival, all of whom gave me much useful help and information. The librarians of the Priaulx Library, and the Guille-Allès Library, St. Peter Port, have also helped me in certain research.
Members of the Greffe Office at the Royal Court assisted me in the translation of certain documents. A number of people, inhabitants of Herm at one time or another during the past fifty years, recounted some of their experiences for my benefit.
The present tenant of Herm, Major Peter Wood, kindly answered a host of questions about the achievements of his tenancy, and also made several useful suggestions for the text.
Above all, I am much indebted to Dr. S. K. Kellett-Smith of Guernsey who has devoted nine years to the study of Herm. His scholarly research, in typescript note form, is now available to readers at the Priaulx Library, St. Peter Port ; and he is undoubtedly the best authority on Herm's history.
MICHAEL MARSHALL.
