Manual of Electric Instruments
Construction and Operating Principles

FOREWORD
The purpose of this manual is to contribute to the more effective use of electric instruments by explaining their operating principles and by illustrating the application of these principles in the instruments commonly used for electrical measurement. Structural features are described in whatever detail is necessary for understanding of their functions, although the manual is not intended to teach instrument design. Neither is it intended to serve as a guide to instrument application.
Based upon teaching material successfully used in the training courses of the General Electric Company, this mannuaI is written for use in technical schools and colleges, in training courses for the armed farces, and as a refresher course for engineers who want to improve their acquaintance with the measuring tools of the electric industry.
All the basic electric measuring instruments are treated, and consideration is given to many of the special instruments that have evolved from the fundamental farms. Electronic instruments have, for the most part, been omitted, because they represent circuit developments rather than electromechanical structures, and their design and construction are not considered to be within the scope of a manual devoted to fundamentals.
With increasing recognition of the need for measurement in all phases of industry, and especially in view of the widespread application of electric instruments to diverse types of measurement, a clear understanding of the basic instrument farms is bound to be useful to the engineer and technician and it is to such an understanding that this manual is dedicated.
