FOREWORD
The word Gayan requires some explanation for Western readers. It can best be translated by "singing", and many of the terms used for the classifications are those employed in Persian and Hindustani for musical or lyric expression. The exact meaning given by Hazrat Inayat Khan to each appears below, and his idea in putting his thought into this particular form may be better understood by his readers if we quote from another of his books. Speaking of the vibrations which form manifestation and are in their totality what man knows as the Universe, he says: "Both sound and colour have their effect on the human soul according to the law of harmony; to a fine soul colour appeals, to a still finer soul sound."
