HANS VAN DER AA
Born in Almelo, in the Netherlands. He spent his youth amidst artistic surroundings, his father, Kees van der Aa, being a well known artist and art dealer.
Hans van der Aa oriented his artistic talents towards photography early in life. Two years study at Goldsmith College in London, England and travels through Europe, North Africa and the Near East helped him became a master in photography.
His works have been published in Europe and in Canada, which he first visited in 1946. He decided to bring his family to this land and in 1948 settled in Montreal.
He pursued his career in Canada and it is not surprising that the great undertaking of the St. Lawrence Seaway attracted his attention. For over five years, he has devoted much time to the taking of more than twelve thousand photographs, of construction phases of this mighty dream, now a reality. He has spent his leisure hours painting the same attractive subject, particularly in water colours.
The grouping in this book of some of his striking photographs and water calours on this great Seaway is a unique achievement. It is a gift of rare value from a new citizen to his country of adoption.
